Comment by muhammad abdullah May 8, 2008 @ 2:30 amASsalaamu alaykum. The date the death of Muhammad Yunus Bath reported in “Chronology of Islam …” on your site is not in sync with the other sources which I have previously come across. Yunus Bath is reported to have signed a petition to the British Government requesting the repatriation of himself and many other co-religionist Africans in 1838. The date reported in one source is Jan. 12 1838. I have seen a photographic copy of the said petition, signed in ‘Arabic characters (!!) by Bath and several others, which document is available from the British Public Record Office (State Papers, Colonial Office : C.O. 295/120.)
Comment by Lars Johnson May 30, 2008 @ 10:09 pmAnother eminent local historian (I’m from Trinidad myself, and am familiar with this man’s work), Michael Anthony, has documented the life, accomplishments and death of Muhammad Yunus Bath (r.a.)in his “Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago.” Here it is reported that Yunus died in mid-September 1838, just weeks after the final Abolition of Slaves became law (August 1st 1838.)
It is significantly noted by most sources that Yunus Bath had purchased his own freedom long before Abolition - Michael Anthony says his name was mentioned as a “free black undertaking a commission for (British) Governor Hislop in 1805!”
Also, Yunus Bath led the movement to purchase the freedom of many slaves as soon as the landed as “human cargo” from an early date as well. This documented by another Trinidadian Historian, Rev. Anthony de Verteuil, in his book “Seven Slaves and Slavery.” Muhammad Yunus Bath was and is a truly heoric figure in the annals of Islamic History in the Caribbean and the Americas.
Please email me for further bibliographic datails as to the sources I mentioned, or to correct my mis-information, if your dates are based on more reliable sources.
Wa’aleikum salaam Lars Johnson (your name sounds typical Scandinavian name, and if speak any languages from Scandinavian countries, være velkommen :-))
